My Beliefs About Birth
Every birth experience should be beautiful.
“I believe every person deserves a birth experience where they are heard, safe and supported. They deserve a birth team – loved ones, doulas, providers – that is totally supportive of that.”
My Story
At nearly six months pregnant, I lost my second child, TJ, to preterm birth. We asked questions about procedures that didn’t feel right—but were met with silence or pressure. “It’s something we’re doing now,” they said. We felt dismissed, unheard, and later wondered if we’d even known the right questions to ask.
As I shared my experience, I heard similar stories from other Black mothers—too many. What cut even deeper was seeing White friends with near-identical risks walk away with their babies in their arms. It felt like they held a card we didn’t—the privilege of information, options, and power.
Working years in public health gave me the language for what we’d lived through—and the tools to do something about it. I don’t want my children, or theirs, to face the same silent losses.
That’s why I do this work: to help birthing people reclaim their voices, understand their options, and shift the power in birth care—because the system needs to change.
The Work I Do Now
Today, I craft a beautiful mix of lived experience with professional expertise to create real change in how we support birth and postpartum care.
As a DONA certified birth doula & doula trainer, Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, and International Board-certified Lactation Consultant (one of the first African-American IBCLCs in North Carolina), I train and mentor aspiring birth professionals, support healthcare teams, and consult with organizations looking to strengthen respectful, family-centered maternal health care.
My focus is twofold:
- Empowering individuals—from new doulas to seasoned providers—with the tools, confidence, and cultural humility to provide respectful, trauma-informed care. I’ve trained well over 400 doulas to support beautiful birth experiences!
- Supporting systems—including hospitals, universities, and community-based programs—to integrate doula care, improve outcomes, and reduce disparities.
Whether I’m leading a hands-on training, advising a healthcare team, or mentoring the next generation of birth workers, my mission is always the same: to bridge the gap between providers and the people they serve, and to reimagine what birth care can look like when families are truly centered.
