So You Want to Be a Doula? Here’s What No One Tells You
Becoming a doula can be one of the most rewarding journeys of your life — but it’s not always the calm, candlelit, “woo-sah”, essential-oil-scented path Instagram might lead you to believe. If you feel called to support birthing people, read on. Here’s the real story behind the work we do.
The Heart Work vs. The Hard Work
Don’t get me wrong, birth work is deeply meaningful. You’re holding space for families during their most vulnerable and transformative moments. But the emotional toll can be intense. Burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary trauma are real. Creating boundaries and support systems is essential from day one – even before you support your first client!
The Training Journey: More Than Just a Weekend Course
Many people think they can attend one weekend training, know all they need to know and start working immediately. While it’s possible for some, the learning curve is steep. If you’ve never experienced this level of support, I’m not going to lie, it can be overwhelming. Certification through organizations like DONA International includes not just the coursework, but also additional reading, practical experiences, resource gathering, and evaluations. You have to be mindful of your capacity and how it fits into your life. It takes time.
The average doula can spend up to 3 years completing certification requirements (DONA International, 2025).
And don’t forget: while it provides credibility, certification isn’t the end of learning. It’s just the beginning.
Getting Clients Isn’t Magic
Marketing yourself as a doula requires strategy and hustle. Word of mouth matters, but so does your online presence. Tell the world about the work you do! You’re changing lives! Many doulas struggle to get their first clients. This is where mentorship, community, and networking come into play. Build relationships with childbirth educators, midwives/OBGYNs, and lactation consultants. Talk with friends and family who may know someone who needs support. It not only gives you more hands on practice, but it also gives you opportunities to talk about your work. The more at ease you are in discussing your value, the better it gets.
Income & Sustainability
So let’s talk money. Depending on your region, you might earn anywhere from $750–$2000 or more per birth. But it’s unpredictable. One month you might support two families, another month none. Consider diversifying your revenue streams: offer prenatal classes, postpartum support, lactation guidance, or virtual services. Don’t forget your “other” skills! If you love cooking and have the skills for meal planning or “personal cheffing”, think about incorporating that. Getting in a meal for new parents is always a challenge. You love dogs – pet sitting or walking for new parents. I once knew someone who had a knack for interior designing – adding in this as a consulting component for nurseries or just making a home more “baby friendly” can be helpful. If you need to take a course or two, go for it. Invest in yourself and your business!
Tips for New Doulas
- Find a mentor or peer support group. You don’t have to go on this journey alone! I can help.
- Shadow an experienced doula if possible.
- Get your business house in order. There are free business resources out there. SCORE.org is amazing! I know some really good mentors. (wink)
- Set up a basic agreement including fees and intake process – BEFORE you take on clients.
- Invest in continuing education.
- Don’t work for free forever – or at all if you can help it.
Final Thoughts
Being a doula is powerful. I call it “legacy” work. It can change your life as much as it changes the lives of the families you serve. If you’re serious about taking the next step, connect with us and schedule a discovery call to talk through the next step in your journey. We’d love to walk with you.
